This time has been ALL about a positive mindset. This is something I’ve always been working towards, but ESPECIALLY during these days in quarantine. I’ve gathered a few reasons why you might be struggling with keeping positive – and how you can stop these from getting in your way!
1. Comparison
This is the #1 thing I hear people complain about!! People compare their appearance, their wardrobe, their relationships, their careers, their social lives, and so much more. This needs to STOP. Comparison is the thief of joy. Rather than thinking about what you don’t have, try focusing on what you do have. For me, writing in a gratitude journal every day has been key. This helps me focus on the positives of each day.
2. Negative Self Talk
Girl, don’t talk about yourself like that!! Negative self talk is TOXIC. If you wouldn’t say it to your best friend, do not say it to yourself. Talking to yourself negatively makes you see the world as a negative place. The next time you have a negative comment to make towards yourself, immediately challenge it with a positive one. Try saying things like “I’m great at XYZ, I deserve the world, I work hard for what I have, etc.” Positive affirmations are key here.
3. Worrying
This is something we are all guilty of at times, especially in the last few months. “Is my job secure? What happens if I get sick??” These things are typically out of our control, so we can’t spend time worrying about it. STOP putting energy towards the “what if’s” in life – it will only drain you and bring you stress. If you start spiraling down this rabbit hole, challenge yourself to meditate and focus on what you CAN control. You can control how you treat others, what you feed yourself, how active you are, etc.
4. Frowning
This might sound silly, but frowning 24/7 is NOT going to help your mood. There have been scientific studies that show smiling is linked to positive mindsets and happier moods. I challenge you to try smiling several times throughout your day! Watch cute puppy videos, watch a comedy skit, talk to your friends, etc. Remember that you’re never fully dressed without a smile!!
5. “Should”
Whatever you do, avoid this word!!! Anytime you say “should,” you’re probably talking about the way things should be. This typically leads to disappointment. Rather than thinking about the way things “should” be, accept what is and focus on the positives of the situation. Maybe you’re currently living with your parents when you “should” be moving into a new apartment in a new city starting your new job. Rather than being upset, think about the quality time you’re getting with your parents. This might be the last situation that you get to spend this much time with them in your adult life, make the most of it! 🙂
Overall, having a positive mindset is so important and I hope these tips help a litte. Go after the life you want & keep KILLING it!!!
